Susan is a queer poet, educator, and youth advocate. Originally from Delaware, they relocated to Colorado Springs in 2012, where they soon became the Pikes Peak Poet Laureate. Susan recently moved to rural Weld County with their husband and three dogs. They led GuloGulo’s 5th Tuesday Performance Workshop in October.

GuloGulo: When did you start writing?

Susan: As a young person, I was alone and separate. I first started composing lines for birthday cards.

GuloGulo: What got you into poetry?

Susan: I then started writing for performance. I was given a topic and expected to produce a product.

GuloGulo: Those are poems that are 3 minutes long?

Susan: I had really great mentors who were not kind. They taught me to tell the story only I could tell.

GuloGulo: What message does your poetry portray?

Susan: First of all, hope. Even though part of me wants to be bitter.

GuloGulo: Do you believe in ghosts?

Susan: Our concept of time is a stupid human concept that is limited. Everyone is always here right now.
