SUMMARY:3rd Tuesday: Open Mic & October Feature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the monthly culmination of the “Journey of the Poem.” The evening begins with an immersive workshop at 4 pm\, hosted this month by featured poet Ben Irwin. Later\, the energy shifts to our community open mic at 6 pm\, a supportive space to share your own work. From first-time readers to seasoned performers\, all are welcome to take the stage and celebrate the diverse voices of our collective. Ben will perform a set halfway through! \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ben\n\n\n\nBen Irwin (he/him) uses both written and spoken word to process the complexities of politics\, masculinity\, and parenthood\, moving away from rigid traditional expectations toward a more vulnerable understanding of the world. A proud member of GuloGulo and the Northern Colorado Chapter of the Columbine Poets\, he has won local poetry slams in Fort Collins and Des Moines\, Iowa. Ben is grateful for friends and family whose support makes this creative journey possible. \n\n\n\nBen sometimes posts content at sublimedevolution.com and instagram.com/sublimedevolution. You can also read a Q&A with Ben at the GuloGulo blog. \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop\n\n\n\nBen hopes to explore the idea that during a performance a poem begins before the first word is spoken. The group will experiment with presence\, stillness\, and the threshold between ordinary behavior and the heightened space of the poem. Through writing prompts and performance exercises\, the workshop will invite poets at every level to discover what the room is already doing before they open their mouths.

SUMMARY:3rd Tuesday: Open Mic & August Feature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the monthly culmination of the “Journey of the Poem.” The evening begins with an immersive workshop at 4 pm\, hosted this month by featured poet venus indigo. Later\, the energy shifts to our community open mic at 6 pm\, a supportive space to share your own work. From first-time readers to seasoned performers\, all are welcome to take the stage and celebrate the diverse voices of our collective. venus will perform a set halfway through! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout venus\n\n\n\nvenus indigo is a poet\, dancer\, and seeker whose chosen name carries its own cosmology. The lowercase v is intentional: the planet deserves the capital. Named for the astrological attributes of love\, beauty\, justice\, and creativity\, and for indigo\, the color of the third eye chakra and one ring of every temporary rainbow\, venus moves through the world in deliberate relationship with forces beyond the human family. Queer and gender dysphoric\, venus has lived across cornfield towns\, skyscraper cities\, and high desert\, finding community circles in each place that have seeded the garden of their consciousness. They write because they love it\, and because they want their work to\, in their own words\, “f*ck with the Mind\, and dance with the Heart.” Their motto for this revolution around the Sun: fierce and fabulous. \n\n\n\nAbout venus’ 4 pm Workshop\n\n\n\nFrom venus: “With my workshop\, i want to inspire People who like to write; to empower People to create language for experience that we can relate to; to challenge the way People engage creative choices.”

SUMMARY:Forms Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The GuloGulo Forms Writing Series is a free monthly meetup where our collective indulges in the deep study and collaborative practice of intentional poetic forms\, devices\, and constructs. From Blank Verse to Sonnets and Tankas\, this inclusive gathering welcomes poets of all levels to explore new traditions and expand their craft together. The work results in an annual Forms Anthology. \n\n\n\nIn an exciting twist\, this month’s discussion will be the creation of a new form\, the Seed Poem\, in which a writer incorporates into their own work a significant word from each line of another Gulogan’s poem.

SUMMARY:3rd Tuesday: Open Mic & July Feature: Jake Friedman!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the monthly culmination of the “Journey of the Poem.” The evening begins with an immersive workshop at 4 pm\, hosted this month by featured poet Jake Friedman. Later\, the energy shifts to our community open mic at 6 pm\, a supportive space to share your own work. From first-time readers to seasoned performers\, all are welcome to take the stage and celebrate the diverse voices of our collective. Jake will perform a featured set halfway through! \n\n\n\nPhoto by Kelsey Pinckney (2023)\n\n\n\nAbout Jake Friedman\n\n\n\nJake Friedman is a poet\, editor\, and culture worker. He has an MFA in Poetry from Colorado State University and is currently serving as Poet Co-Laureate of Fort Collins\, CO\, among other things. He has a very cute two year old who you may have seen walking around town sometimes. He lives with his partner down the street from Wolverine. \n\n\n\nAbout Jake’s 4 pm Workshop\n\n\n\nHammers\, Mirrors\, Restive Hands: Documentary PoeticsSaussure says that language is at every moment a product of the past. Ergo\, perhaps the poet is a kind of a historian. Our task\, then\, is to seize a memory at the moment of danger\, to resist becoming a tool of the ruling class. Documentary poetics (the practice of composing from other texts) is an underworld practice—a channeling or summoning\, necromancy or possession—a critical tool we can leverage against power and institutions\, an examination of our own position or complicity. \n\n\n\nAnd so\, what we’re going to do in this workshop is: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduce the movement or process known as documentary poetics\n\n\n\nRead and discuss one or two of the following authors—Layli Long Soldier\, Muriel Rukeyser\, Anne Carson\, M Nourbese Philip\, Solmaz Sharif\, Nicole Sealey\n\n\n\nGlance briefly at theory\n\n\n\nThink about how documentary might fit into your own work\n\n\n\nGive you a little space to get started \n\n\n\nShare and receive on-the-spot feedback\n\n\n\nProvide references and resources for future reading\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: writers of all backgrounds and experiences are welcome. You don’t also need to have ‘a project’ or ‘work’ to participate.
